Up again at 5:00 am and quickly packed our clothes and gear, trying to avoid
the mosquitoes as much as possible. We rode a mile or so to a local
restaurant that provided breakfast, then headed out on the road about 6:45
am. The route alternated between road and trail, with most of the trail
being paved, and went along both the Mohawk River and Champlain Canal. There
was a pretty impressive set of falls in the town of Cohoes (called Cohoes
Falls - go figure), and after a short stop at today's only rest stop we rode
the last 10 miles into Corning Preserve, which is right on the Hudson River
in downtown Albany. We spent about 2½ hours in the parking lot,
alternating between arranging gear, disassembling and packing the tandem in
the box, and saying our goodbyes to some of the friends we have made this
week. We caught a ride to a local pool with one of the Albany volunteers
where we took showers, he then gave us a ride back to the lot and our bags.
I sent the tandem with UPS (ground this time!), and we caught a taxi to the
airport, where we waited for our flight back home.
This has been an incredible week. It's the first time I've cycled for
eight days in a row, Liam's longest ride, Liam's longest day, and the
rainiest day either of us has ever experienced on a bike. It's been a great
adventure and we will likely do similar rides (hopefully with Sandy and
Payton) in the future.
