Once again it was a wise decision to stay in the dorm last night as there
was another rain shower that moved through the area before midnight. We
arose early, packed our mostly dry clothes, and went back to the student
center for breakfast. We then headed back down the hill into town under
cloudy and somewhat threatening skies. We wound back and forth through
Syracuse streets until we rejoined the Canalway trail. The conditions were
much better although there were still a few puddles, muddy spots, and small
washouts. The first rest stop was at an old canal boat dry dock, where we
walked around the old dock while snacking on fruit and cookies. Our next
stop was at Lock #21, but unfortunately there was no boating activity so we
were not able to see the lock in operation. After riding further on the
trail we stopped for watermelon at the second rest stop, then proceeded to a
museum that features mule-drawn canal boat rides, steam train rides, and
tours of a restored Erie Canal town. Since the canal boat was damaged it was
not running, so we took a steam train ride, watched the blacksmith, and ate
ice cream before continuing into Rome.
The route through Rome was on fairly busy city streets, and we shortly
arrived at Fort Stanwix, which is a restored Revolutionary War fort. Tent
City was set up on the grounds, and we pitched our tent about 50 feet from
the fort walls. Actually, I pitched the tent while Liam chased after and
caught grasshoppers. After showers, delivery of the tandem to the bike
detail guy, and refreshing smoothies, we walked around the fort. It was
really interesting to see how the fort was designed, and we were amazed at
the conditions in which they lived.
After our self-guided tour we took the shuttle to Applebee's where we
joined a couple from Sammamish and a father/daughter tandem team from New
Jersey for dinner. Back to Tent City after dinner where Liam played with
some of the other kids and I worked on this page and got our gear ready for
another day of riding tomorrow. Went to bed at the usual time but were kept
awake by street noises since we're right in the middle of town.
