Day 2 - Monday July 10th
Medina, NY to Pittsford, NY

Route Distance: 53.3   Riding Time: 4:15
Total Distance: 100.7   Average Speed: 12.9
Riding Distance: 55.0   Maximum Speed: 25.5

We got up at 5:00 am and after getting dressed, Liam went inside the school while I broke camp. The rain gods must have looked favorably on us as I had just zipped up our camping gear bag when the rain started. We ate breakfast, good but not as plentiful as we needed for another day in the saddle. We headed out into a heavy drizzle and made our way through the streets of Medina until we reached the Canalway trail. The rain was alternating drizzle and sprinkle with a few patches of dry and one 10 minute period of heavy rain.  All-in-all not too bad, although I got quite warm under my rain jacket and finally took it off.

The trail from camp to the first rest stop was very bumpy, with washboarding caused by tractor tire treads. As you can imagine, the crushed rock trail made for a dirty bike. The trail conditions improved markedly after the first rest stop, and we proceeded on, enjoying the sights of cruise boats on the canal. The second rest stop featured as much fresh fruit as we could eat, all sponsored by the mayor of Rochester, NY. Liam and I were even interviewed by the local NBC affiliate!

After the second rest stop the trail was mostly paved and also had a few ups and downs, which was a refreshing change of pace. We pulled into Nazareth College in Pittsford, NY around 1:30, got our clothes bag (camping bag went back in the truck as we have a dorm room tonight), and dropped the tandem off with the Bike Detail guy (complete bike cleaning and lube at a reasonable cost). A shuttle took us and our gear to the dorm, where we had a wonderful hot shower and also started some laundry. Back to Tent City to get the bike and my laptop, then back to the dorm where I discovered that the rooms had live internet connections. I'm very pleased we have a room tonight as a thunderstorm moved through and really soaked the Tent City.

Dinner was in one of the campus dining halls and was great! They had chicken, penne and cheese, veggies, apple crisp, a salad bar, a sandwich bar, and ice cream for dessert. We were really hungry and enjoyed it all. Back to the dorm room to update this site, maybe swimming later, although they're not opening the pool until 8:30 which is awfully close to our bedtime.
